Practical breathing techniques to improve your swimming and general health
Available spots
Service Description
This is a unique workshop for swimmers of all levels, from someone who struggles with the mechanics of breathing, or gets breathless after a few lengths, to a seasoned triathlete, marathon or Masters swimmer who wants to boost their performance (improve endurance, speed, recovery) without having to train harder or longer in the water. Learn to use your breath as your performance enhancer! Optimise your daily breathing habits for improved physical and mental health and more efficient breathing when swimming! This workshop will help you become aware of your daily functional breathing patterns on land (including during sleep) and how this might be impacting your swimming (or any other sport you partake in) and your health. We will assess certain aspects of your functional breathing on land to highlight areas for improvement and give you some baseline measurements. We will then practice various breathing exercises to improve the efficiency of your breathing, both on land and in the pool. Breathing exercises can also be used as tools to influence our Autonomic Nervous System. This may be to calm us when stressed or anxious (perhaps before an event), to oxygenate our body and prepare it to deal with higher levels of CO2 before swimming, to reduce our heart rate for quicker recovery, to recover quicker between swim sets in the pool, etc. We will alternate classroom and practical land-based breathing sessions with pool sessions focusing on breathing in front crawl. There is a lot more to breathing in front crawl than just learning to inhale and exhale and we will explore this in depth. Tea, coffee and a simple buffet lunch will be provided. Swimmers need to be able to swim at least 100m front crawl to take full advantage of this workshop.
